A Manufacturing Execution System (MES) records and manages how a work order is actually carried out on the shop floor, in real time. It closes the gap between what was planned and what happened.
A factory has three layers. Above sits planning (ERP), deciding what to make and when. Below sits control (PLC, SCADA), physically moving the equipment. MES lives between them: it turns plans into instructions the floor can execute, and sends the results back up.
Without MES that link is made of people. Work orders go down on paper, results come back in logbooks, and the lag and omissions in between become inventory error and missed dates. If reconciling numbers at month-end is a recurring chore, this layer is usually missing.
A typical MES covers work order release, production counting, material issue and inventory movement, inspection results, equipment status, and the traceability that ties all of it to a lot or a serial. Where the boundary sits varies: many plants split quality into a QMS and maintenance into a CMMS.
ERP works in planning and accounting units — orders, purchases, cost, monthly inventory. MES works in execution units — one work order, one lot, minute-by-minute output. They are not competitors; they operate at different time resolutions, and are usually connected by pushing production results and material movements from MES up into ERP.
